"I have now been exposed to a wide range of information"- Favour Omaji (WAVE Alumnus)

Image
After working with three different establishments, Favour could only make meagre savings for herself. She searched for better opportunities but her efforts proved unproductive. This was difficult! The fact that she lacked information at critical points was the genesis of the situation. This worried her because ends needed to be met but the means were unavailable. She finally got the opportunity to come to WAVE through the recommendation of a friend and decided to go on with the program, as the Ajah centre which she attended, was not much of a distance to her place of abode.  The fact that she hungered for more knowledge about skills relating to better opportunities with respect to the hospitality industry was her drive. At WAVE, she learnt skills in communication and was willing to know more about the things that were not clear to her. Though her expectations were high, she did not lose sight of what she wanted out of the experience. She also took part in the job shadow ...

The key facets of each individual life were listed as follows; Foundational Facets- 1. Physical facets 2. Spiritual facets 3. Personal development Practical assessments were carried out and it was concluded that separate areas of life, filter into other areas, therefore mismanagement, of any area may be an impending disaster in one's career. FINANCIAL VS. NON FINANCIAL MOTIVATIONS FOR JOB SEEKERS

Image
I You’ve been hitting the street with your CV, applying to a company after company, hoping to find that job that will lift you out of unemployment. Or maybe you’ve been shopping around for a new job while at a company that’s not quite ticking all the boxes. Either way, it finally happens: you get a job offer. You clinched it! Your excitement, however, gives way as you nervously begin to consider the offer. The salary isn’t quite where you’d like it to be, but you think you like the manager who interviewed you. Or maybe it’s better than you expected, but the office is far away from where you live. So many things to consider. With an overall unemployment rate of almost 19% and a youth unemployment rate of over 33% , finding work in today’s Nigeria isn’t easy, so it’s important you make an informed decision, whether you’re changing jobs or getting your first job. You don’t want to find yourself in a few weeks or months regretting the choice you made. You can always leave, but there will ...

Reasonable Accommodation: A Factor for a Favourable Work Environment

Image
Reasonable accommodation: a factor for a favourable work environment Image credit: blackenterprise.com As an employer of labour, it is expected of any employee in your organization to dutifully perform tasks assigned to him/her without any necessary supervision.  After all, what is the essence of an employee’s existence in the organization? However, whether we choose to deny or affirm, employees consider the level of conduciveness of work environment and their relationship with their employer as a drive for productivity and like factors, they weigh when picking a choice between quitting a job to take on another. Asides the usual salary benefit and added allowances, paid leave, holidays; another important consideration for them is ‘reasonable accommodation’.  The term ‘reasonable accommodation initially encompassed benefits for disabled employees, however, recently, it has been stretched beyond the initial conventional meaning to cover adjustments for other employees also. "Learn to learn, learn to unlearn, learn to relearn." Chukwuemeka Okeke

Image
CHUKWUEMEKA OKEKE Philosophical, theoretical, strategic—all in one man, an embodiment of knowledge. Chukwuemeka is an ambitious young man who can boast of learnings at every point of his life. In fact, he believes that every day should be dedicated to learning something different: “learn to learn, learn to unlearn, learn to relearn” is the theory that he believes in. Chukwuemeka before coming to WAVE was a business development officer for an agricultural company and he did majorly research work. It was quite challenging and tasking for him because of the distance and the fact that he was not earning enough to sustain himself. Nonetheless, he enjoyed the job and he derived satisfaction from it. The job presented him with opportunities to meet people every day, have tryouts and practicalize ideas. However, Chukwuemeka always had the desire to be a public speaker and a trainer, teaching people about entrepreneurship and agriculture and also training people in the acquisition of soft skill...

"I wished to train myself and improve; WAVE offered all these"- Raphael Okonkwo (WAVE Alumnus)

Image
Alumni impact story-  Raphael Okonkwo Raphael is an interesting young man, vibrant and willing to learn. He stretches himself beyond his abilities and strives to move beyond limitations. Raphael   had just completed his secondary school education and he was going through a computer literacy training when he heard about WAVE. Since he aspires to be a television host and a presenter, he searched for employment opportunities in that field, but no one was ready to employ him because he did not have the required academic qualifications. In other words, the major constraint for him was his level of education. Therefore, he resolved to working hard in a similar field in order to save enough to get the necessary degree or qualification for his dream and also “augment family expenses.” Raphael heard about WAVE through town - storming; an outreach activity where WAVE is evangelized in different neighborhoods. The program attracted Raphael and he proceeded to researching WAVE onli...

WAVE meets the Creative Industry

Image
On October 18, 2018, WAVE, with the support of the Ford Foundation, convened a roundtable of TV/Film Production and Media experts to discuss the skills gaps (read: opportunities) in the sector. We wanted to know what the biggest skills gaps were in the sector - in terms of depth (must acute/expensive gaps) as well as breadth (largest volume gaps). More specifically, we wanted to know where the hundreds of thousands of work opportunities (not jobs) would be generated in the creative industry and what would be required to scale the quality of training programs generating skills/talent for the sector. In attendance were  James Omokwe (Feemo),  Femi Ogunsanwo (FM Film Studio), Victor Sanchez Aghahowa (TatafoHQ), Paul Nwulu (Ford Foundation), Bolaji Kekere-Ekun (37th State), Chioma Onyewe (Raconteur Productions), Jude Idada (Playwright / Filmmaker), Ojoma Ochai (British Council), Ade Laoye (Actress), Chike Maduegbuna (Afrinolly) and Rita Omovbhude (Street Project Foundation). ...

13th International Conference & Exhibition on ICT For Education, Training & Skills Development

Image
The E-learning conference this year was held at Rwanda .The conference was an avenue for different organizations to express their progress in E-learning scope. E-learning facilities were provided and they were taught how they can be used to solve both educational and real life work problems. Based on the fact that WAVE as an organization has plans of taking  its training content online, it was only necessary that WAVE be in attendance at the conference. However, there were soft skill training sessions where organizations like WAVE were taught how to use e-learning to build on what they are presently teaching. Our representatives also presented some of the soft skill programs that they offer and the challenges that are involved in it. The key take-away from this conference are: The current educational system in most schools in Africa are failing students as well as employees and this system will continue to be the bane of this failure if it is not changed. As Margaret Brown of globa...
